Wynnsday 2012

"The Annual Release"

The annual release of the Wynns' wines, on the appropriately named Wynnsday (rather bizarrely, their site doesn't actually tell you the date but we believe it to be August 1) is always keenly awaited. Aside from the fact that, every year, they are almost certain to be both good drinking and good value, it is a chance to have a decent look across the board at current vintages in Coonawarra. In recent years, we've seen new wines join the portfolio. These have mostly been single vineyard wines but this year, for the first time, a Black Label Shiraz joins the team (the Black Label Cabernet has just chalked up its 55th vintage, so there is some catching up to do – of course, not all of those were actually under a black label). And it is a cracker.

Also worth passing on congrats to Sue Hodder, their chief winemaker. 2012 was her 20th year making wine in Coonawarra for Wynns.

Too often, we forget that the reputation of Coonawarra originally rode the back of shiraz. Cabernet was a relative latecomer. Try wines like the fantastic Wynn's Michael Hermitage from 1955 (it was many years before 'Michael' became a regular release) or the stunning Treasure Chest series from Woodley (as an aside, I was chatting with a mate recently who just happened to have been poking about in his cellar and came across a full set or two – lucky bastard!). Cabernet was coronated later but continues its reign. At one stage, Coonawarra Cabernet was the top dog in Australia, daylight second. Margaret River was then dismissed as a johnny-come-lately but surprised many by equalling, and for many, topping Coonawarra. Then came the explosion of worldwide interest in great shiraz, especially from places like the Barossa. One could also argue that both the Barossa and Margaret River have enjoyed better vintage conditions over the last decade than Coonawarra.

2009 was certainly a good year, quite rich, though it was cooler than the years bookending it. 2010 more elegant. 2011 was no one's favourite, whereas 2012 just might be. It seems that everywhere (leaving aside such distant regions as West Australia and Tassie) disliked 2011 and loved 2012.

No matter. There have still been many very fine wines bottled from the region in recent years and a fair number of them have had 'Wynn’s' on the label.
