ross, fascinating post - about the only thing that doesn't surprise me is the colour. lot of nebb is little more than pale orange.but i don't think i've ever seen a sparkling nebb and i suspect unlikely down here.
keep the odd ones coming.

Excellent review, thank you Ross for sharing it with us!The comment in regards to the orange colour, Nebbiolo is probably close in profile to a Pinot when it comes to colour and aging potential.
When you mentioned it had a Nebbiolo nose, first thing that came to my mind was Cherry and Roses.
Were you able to take a photo of the bottle by any chance?
I love it when you buy a bottle that you've never tried before and it just hits all the right spots.
Cheers,
Elie.

elie, colour i agree with to a degree (nebb has more of an orange note quite often), but ageing potential i wonder about. some of the serious barolos will go forever. so too, can pinot but i'd suggest that in general, it is for drinking in a much earlier window.
anyone any other thoughts?

Many new world Pinots and some burgs are made to be drank young.

completely agree, but i don't think too many barolo's are made to drink (or even drank) early. of course, the wines like nebb d'alba and the ilk are for drinking earlier.

Elie, I kept the bottle and will post a pic soon. In the meantime, they do have a website if you want to have a look. I guess the aspect of color which was "surprising" was not just that it was on the orange side, but that coupled with the effervescence, it seemed to almost glow.Taste - wise, I think what stood out for me was that while it had all the sensations of a sparkler, right in the middle the grape was front and center - the star, but all was nicely balanced.

Also,Very surprised that the price is quite simliar to the USA?! I would have thought that we would be paying double for it here down under.
Regards,
Elie.

Elie, I thought the same thing.
The shop deals with many wines I don't see in most other shops (she had some sparkling Aussie red, but I had to choose one or the other). The shop might be a little more expensive than some outside of town, but as this wine is not too readily available, all things considered, I don't think I overpaid too much.
I have found it on a couple of online sites for between U.S. $50 and $60, so the Aussie price sounds about right. Unfortunately, I can't have wine shipped from outside my home state (protectionist regs). But......
It's just possible I might have ways around that

Regardless, I'm glad you guys have access, and I'd surely be interested in hearing your thoughts should you give it a try.

ross, i thought that the courts had overturned those laws and that it was now possible? not so?

ross, i thought that the courts had overturned those laws and that it was now possible? not so?"
I wish....
It varies from state to state - it's not a federal issue. So for instance, if I lived in California, I could receive wine shipments from anywhere in the country. Here in Massachusetts, I can only have wine shipped to me from within the state. I like to support my locals, but sometimes it would just be easier to order more directly. In my scenario, I could never get on a list outside my state, etc.
The bottom line is that distributors have to get their cut......and if that sounds a little gangster, make no mistake - it is.
Anyway, if for some reason you guys can't get a bottle - KG - let me know, and I'll do my best to send one out.

was thinking the exact same thing. Thank you ross for the link I will purchase it and perhaps do a vid review on it.

They had no more but the owner suggested I have a look at this. And me - a sparkling Italian nebbiolo? Never heard of one, so how could I resist - even at U.S. $75?
Today being a day ending in Y, I figured it as good as any to pop the cork.....
The aroma upon opening filled the room, which kind of took me by surprise - citrus along the line of grapefruit. The color surprised me a bit as well - light watermelon, but more on the orange side.
Taste - front palate as it smelled - grapefruit citrus. the mid is harder to explain if you are not familiar with nebbiolo - it was all nebbiolo.... to try and characterize it is like a hard watermalon candy which is not overly sweet - the mid palate is almost like a still nebbiolo.
The finish comes around to show this is a dry sparkler with just enough astringency, all is defined and in balance. I don't know if this will ever be seen in Oz, and I hope I'm not over doing it, but this just may be one of the best I've had in some time - it's almost like taking a fave and adding fizz, if that make any sense.
