In this episode Ken meets with wine geek Rick Bakas (author, sommelier and brand strategist) to discuss his thoughts on the future of the wine industry and how social media is changing the world as we know it.

We think this is an interesting topic, and one which we'd love to know...

great video guys! Would have loved to have seen Ken put Rick to the test with a review/tasting of sorts. His comments about the digital world are spot on and I think it's great. As a wine novice I love the fact I can come to spitbucket both here and on facebook to get some tips and suggestions on wines. With so many to pick from it's hard to know where to start..

I don't know guys.........

I don't do myspace, facebook, twitter, etc. I don't have a "smart"phone - when absolutely necessary, I use my cellphone..... to make phone calls! I dread the thought of saving up to go to a nice restaurant only to find all around me using their "smart"phones to check wines and menu items. If I'm ever handed an ipad upon entering such a restaurant, I'll most likely turn around and walk out the door.

With all this technology, why not do all the ordering beforehand - that way your food and wine will be waiting for you when you sit
down. Better yet, it could be delivered to your home, avoiding all human interaction altogether. Call me a dinosaur, but I still expect
the staff of a halfway decent restaurant to be able to have a passable knowledge of the food and wines on their menu.

Cheers -- Ross

@Ross Hi Ross, its not just with wine but with everything mate. The world is moving in the digital direction and people are more and more becoming dependant on it. It wont be long till as you say, you will go into a restaurant and be handed an iPad. Its a matter of time - and yes it wont be long before everyone pulls out their iphone to check a wine review before ordering a glass. Its already happening.
I remember around 10 years back when internet banking started - I always said I would never do it online. It wasnt long before i adopted it and today, many prefer their banking online rather than having to go into a branch.
We cant try fight technology but the past shows you cant beat it, inevitably we'll all join it...

@Ross Drew, that sounds very star trek borg-ish - "resistance is futile, you will be assimilated"!LOL! I'm not against technology - we all use it every day whether
we realize it or not. I hope you understand I'm just offering a different perspective
for discussion. (I'm more a fan of independence vs. dependence)

But I will continue to shut my phone off before entering a restaurant, remove my
hat if I'm wearing one, play sports outside instead of inside with wii....

I guess if pressed I lean more toward the slow food movement - sometimes I just
want to take a couple of hours to stop and smell the roses, so to speak.

Thanks :-) -- Ross

I LOVE the social media talk. Interesting interview. The only problem is that it was filmed a month ago. Are all videos filmed one month in advance? I hope not...It's all about relevance.

@MaxMurrey it was a fun day at the office.
the swig will be better able to sort out the timing of video releases for you. at the moment, it is early days and we have a heap of what we think is really good stuff in the can, so some inevitably a bit dated. as we progress, that should become far less of a problem.
at the moment, they are not released in order of filming so some will be out very quickly and others, hopefully the ones less time-constrained, may take a smidge longer.
