Tasting Note:

This is the only wine that Andrew Caillard makes. Andrew is Australia's wine renaissance man one of our first Masters of Wine, a writer and presenter, formerly a leading auctioneer and now consultant to one of our major liquor chains (or something like that), he is also an accomplished artist and paints his own labels. This one features a scene with a dragonfly (to be honest, when I first saw it, I wondered why he'd painted a wonky mosquito but on closer inspection, dragonflies they are). It was apparently inspired by a wood-cut design by 19th century Japanese artist, Hiroshige.

The fruit comes from the edge of the Dorrien and Marananga sub-regions, as well as sixty-year-old vines from Kalimna. Only 400 cases were made. The wine spent around 14 months in new just 10% oak and the rest more seasoned.

Whereas most of the mataro's I looked at had very definite black fruit notes, this one actually tends a little more to the red currant end of the spectrum. A delicious effort. Lots of floral notes. Some spice. An evocative wine (just after I did my notes, I noticed that this was also mentioned on the back label great minds, I would like to say but it is just that sort of wine). Mid weight style, much more elegant than most of this variety. Lingers well.

Was just a joy to drink.
