Wynn's Coonawarra Claret 1955

Country: Australia
Price: N/A
Region: Coonawarra
Winery Name: Wynn's
Variety:
Shiraz
Cabernet Franc
Vintage: 1955
Score: 95 points

Tasting Date:

1st Apr 2011

Tasting Note:

Believed to be half cab and half shiraz. Made by Norm Walker, his second vintage in Coonawarra, and served on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of O'Leary Walker in the Clare Valley, Nick Walker being Norm's son. Remember that this was made in a winery that had no power. A steam engine was needed for crushing. Sulphur was used to kill wild yeasts and champagne yeasts used for fermentation. Plunged three times a day. Horse drawn carts needed to get the grapes out of the vineyards pre the wet, before transfer to old wooden vats.
It was a pleasure and a privilege to drink. Just a beautiful, elegant wine. Norm thought that it would have only been 11 or 11.5% alcohol. What a change from the massive in-your-face blockbusters of today Shows how important balance is. Still fully alive.
It still offered beautiful fruit that lingered so well. Soft, mellow and complex. Lovely.
